Aloe vera & the bladder
The genuine Super-Strength Aloe Vera
Freeze-dried, anthraquinone-free aloe vera — the aloe many people with a sensitive bladder have chosen for decades, now distributed across Europe by Bivio Medical.
For interstitial cystitis & a sensitive bladder
How Super-Strength Aloe Vera soothes the bladder in IC/BPS
Interstitial cystitis (IC/BPS) is a long-term bladder condition — pressure, pain and a constant urge that ordinary tests often cannot explain. It is the reason most people find Desert Harvest. Here is how the aloe works, in plain terms.
The bladder wall is lined by a delicate protective coating — the glycosaminoglycan, or GAG, layer. In interstitial cystitis this layer is thought to be compromised, so substances in urine reach the sensitive tissue underneath and trigger discomfort. Super-Strength Aloe Vera is made from concentrated, purified aloe, a natural source of acemannan and other long-chain polysaccharides that studies suggest may support this protective layer. All aloe naturally contains aloin — the harsh anthraquinone that can itself irritate the bladder — and ours is removed by a patented decolourising process, leaving a gentle, anthraquinone-free preparation with more than 200 naturally occurring compounds.
Supports the bladder's protective layer
Acemannan and aloe polysaccharides — the compounds studies link to the GAG layer that shields the bladder wall.
Gentle by design — aloin removed
All aloe naturally contains aloin, the harsh anthraquinone that can irritate the bladder; ours is removed, leaving concentrated, soothing, anthraquinone-free aloe.
The aloe behind thirty years of IC care
Concentrated 200:1, vegan, and the only aloe named in the IPBF global IC/BPS guidance — chosen by people with interstitial cystitis since the 1990s.
People with IC/BPS who take it report calmer days and fewer flare-ups, used both as a daily routine and through a flare. Responses vary: some notice a difference within the first weeks, while for others the three-month build-up is what counts, as the aloe polysaccharides accumulate. It is a food supplement, not a medicine — but it is the aloe that many people with a sensitive bladder have returned to for decades.
Super-Strength Aloe Vera is the only aloe supplement named in the International Painful Bladder Foundation's global guidance for IC/BPS. A 1995 placebo-controlled study found 87.5% of those who completed it had relief from at least some symptoms; a 2016 Interstitial Cystitis Association survey of 660 customers reported 92% experienced relief; and a randomised Wake Forest University trial (NCT04734106) is under way — see our aloe vera science page for the full evidence. Questions people ask
Can aloe vera help with interstitial cystitis (IC/BPS)?
Many people with IC/BPS use purified aloe vera as part of their daily routine. Studies suggest its acemannan and polysaccharides may support the bladder's protective GAG layer, and in surveys most respondents reported improvement. It is a food supplement that people with a sensitive bladder have relied on for decades, not a medicine, and responses vary from person to person.
What is the GAG layer, and how does aloe relate to it?
The glycosaminoglycan (GAG) layer is the protective coating that lines the inside of the bladder. In interstitial cystitis it is thought to be compromised, so irritants in urine reach the tissue beneath. Desert Harvest aloe is a natural source of the kind of polysaccharides studies associate with supporting this layer.
How long before people with IC notice a difference?
It varies. Some people report a change within the first week or two; for others it is the full three-month routine that matters, as the aloe polysaccharides build up. The usual approach is six capsules a day with plenty of clear liquid, adjusted to what keeps you comfortable.
Can it be used during a flare?
Yes. Many people increase their aloe during a flare and ease back once things settle — see the dosage guide for the full first-days, first-months and flare routine. Some people pair it with Calcium Glycerophosphate for food-related acidity and Quercetin for mast-cell support.
Why people choose it
What's in every bottle

Freeze-dried 200:1
Purified aloe vera, concentrated 200:1 and freeze-dried to a stable powder. No refrigeration needed.
Aloin-free & vegan
Made from anthraquinone-free aloe and filled into vegan capsules (tapioca). 180 capsules per bottle.
A calm daily routine
Six capsules across the day with two glasses of clear liquid — roughly one month per bottle.
How it's made
Freeze-dried, aloin-free aloe vera
Super-Strength Aloe Vera is made from concentrated, purified aloe vera. The process removes the anthraquinones (including aloin) and the insoluble fibres, leaving a gentle, concentrated aloe preparation.
The aloe is freeze-dried to a 200:1 powder and filled into vegan capsules — shelf-stable, with no need to refrigerate. Aloe vera is naturally a source of aloe polysaccharides, including acemannan.
We describe the composition plainly and let you decide. To understand how aloe vera and the bladder are discussed, and what the EU rules mean, read the guide.
