Aloe vera for scars: what it can and cannot do

Search for a way to make a scar disappear and the internet will happily sell you miracles. We would rather be honest. A good aloe will not erase a scar, but kept calm, soft and well moisturised, a scar has its best chance to settle and fade — to come to look softer, smoother and less noticeable over time. Here is the truthful picture of what aloe vera can do for the look of a scar, what it cannot, and how to choose an aloe worth putting on healing skin.

Can aloe vera get rid of scars?

No, and we will not pretend otherwise. A scar is a permanent change in the structure of the skin, and nothing in a jar removes it. What a gentle, well-formulated aloe product genuinely can do is improve the appearance of a scar: keep it moisturised, supple and protected so that, over weeks and months, the mark can look softer, flatter and less discoloured. The difference is made by patience and consistency, not by any single application.

How aloe supports the look of a scar

Aloe vera is one of the gentlest things you can put on reactive or healing skin — soothing, lightly moisturising, and free of the harsh extras that so often sting. Its long-chain polysaccharides hold water at the surface, and moisturised scar tissue stays supple; supple skin tends to settle and fade more kindly than skin that is left dry and tight. Many people also report that a calm aloe eases the itch and tightness of a healing scar, which makes it easier to leave the area alone to recover.

What kind of aloe to look for

The label is the whole game. Look for aloe that is purified and anthraquinone-free — meaning the aloin and related compounds, which all aloe naturally contains and which can irritate healing skin, have been removed by a decolourising process. Gently processed, fragrance-free, and with as few added ingredients as possible is what sensitive, recovering skin wants. Many inexpensive gels are mostly water, thickener and added scent, which is the opposite of helpful.

A good aloe will not erase a scar. Kept soft, calm and moisturised, a scar simply has its best chance to settle and fade.

Old scars, new scars, surgical, acne and stretch marks

The marks differ but the principle is the same. Once the skin has fully closed — never on an open wound — gentle daily moisturising over months gives the best chance of a softer look. New, pink scars tend to respond more than old, pale ones. A surgical scar can be cared for once your surgeon confirms it has healed. Many acne “scars” are really post-inflammatory discolouration, which fades with consistent moisture and good sun protection. Stretch marks are a change in the skin's deeper collagen: aloe can keep them soft and may improve how they look, but it will not make them vanish. For any scar that is raised, painful, darkening or changing, see a doctor.

How to use aloe on a scar

Wait until it has closed

Only ever on fully healed, unbroken skin — never an open or weeping wound.

Little and often

A thin layer once or twice a day, gently massaged in until absorbed.

Think in months

Scars settle and fade over weeks and months, not days — consistency wins.

Protect from the sun

Fresh scars darken in sunlight; keep them covered or use a high SPF.

Common questions

Does aloe vera get rid of scars?

No. Aloe can help the appearance of a scar over time by keeping it moisturised and supple, so that it may look softer and less noticeable, but the scar itself does not disappear.

How long does aloe take to improve a scar?

Think in weeks to months of consistent daily use rather than days. New, pink scars generally respond more than old, pale ones, and regular use matters far more than any single application.

Can I use aloe on a surgical scar?

Once the wound is fully closed and your surgeon confirms it has healed, gentle daily aloe is a reasonable way to keep the scar supple. While it is still open or healing, follow your surgeon's advice rather than ours.

Does aloe help acne scars?

Many acne “scars” are actually post-inflammatory discolouration rather than true scarring, and that kind of mark can fade with consistent moisture and good sun protection. Aloe is a gentle option to include in that routine.

Does aloe help stretch marks?

Stretch marks are a change in the skin's deeper collagen. Aloe can keep them soft and may improve how they look, but it will not remove them. As with scars, consistency over months gives the best chance of a softer appearance.

What kind of aloe is best for scars?

Purified, anthraquinone-free aloe with the aloin removed, ideally fragrance-free and gently processed. All aloe naturally contains aloin, which can irritate healing or sensitive skin, so removing it matters.

Is aloe vera safe to use on scars and sensitive skin?

Aloe is gentle and widely used, but skin is individual, so patch-test on a small area first and stop if you notice any irritation. For scars that are raised, painful, or changing — including keloid scars — speak to a doctor.
