What it is

What is Human Bioidentical Lactoferrin with Aloe Vera?

Lactoferrin is a protein found naturally in human milk and colostrum, and in smaller amounts in other bodily fluids. This product pairs a bioidentical — that is, human-identical — lactoferrin with Desert Harvest's aloe vera.

The lactoferrin is made by precision fermentation rather than extracted from cow's milk, so it is of dairy-free, non-animal origin. It is the ingredient known as effera, developed by Helaina, and shares the same protein structure that occurs in human milk. These are descriptions of what the ingredient is, not health claims.

Bioidentical (human-identical) lactoferrin is a novel food under Regulation (EU) 2015/2283. This means it must complete a European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) safety assessment and gain EU authorisation before it may be sold in the European Union. That process is under way; until it concludes, this product is not available to buy in the EU. Lactoferrin from cow's milk is already an authorised novel food in the EU, but this human-identical version follows its own separate authorisation route.

Desert Harvest, the United States parent brand, has specialised in aloe vera since 1993; the European range is distributed by Bivio Medical B.V. in the Netherlands. We make no health or nutrition claims about this product.

Questions people ask

Human bioidentical lactoferrin: common questions

What is human bioidentical lactoferrin?
Lactoferrin is a protein found naturally in human milk and colostrum. 'Bioidentical', or human-identical, means it shares the same structure as the lactoferrin in human milk. This version is made by precision fermentation rather than from cow's milk, so it is of dairy-free, non-animal origin. This is a description of what the ingredient is, not a health claim.
When will it be available in Europe?
We cannot confirm a date. As a novel food under Regulation (EU) 2015/2283, it must first complete an EFSA safety assessment and gain EU authorisation. Industry estimates point to around 2027*, but this is an estimate only and depends on the regulatory process.
Can I buy it now?
Not yet. This product is not available to buy in the European Union while its novel-food authorisation is pending. You can register your interest above and we will let you know when that changes.
