Interstitial cystitis in Norway: a calm resource in English for bladder pain syndrome
You have had test after test. The urine culture comes back sterile — no bacteria — and the antibiotics that once helped now do nothing at all. Yet it still stings, it aches, and you need the toilet again and again. Many women are told that «it is your age», «it is your nerves» or «it is the menopause», and it can take years before anyone puts the words interstitial cystitis to it.
There is no dedicated Norwegian patient association for interstitial cystitis. That is why Desert Harvest Europe has gathered calm, fact-based information in English for anyone living with bladder pain syndrome — drawing on international professional bodies such as the IPBF and the ICS.

When the urine culture is sterile, but the bladder still aches
One of the most confusing patterns with interstitial cystitis is exactly this: the symptoms resemble cystitis, but the tests show no bacteria. You feel the stinging, the urgency and the pain above the bladder, yet cystitis without bacteria does not fit the usual explanation of an infection to be cleared with antibiotics.
When antibiotics repeatedly have no effect and the culture is sterile, it is often a sign that this is not an ordinary urinary tract infection, but a long-term condition in the bladder wall itself. This is when many people begin to read up on interstitial cystitis and bladder pain syndrome.
From recurring cystitis to bladder pain syndrome
Many people start with what they believe is recurring cystitis. It comes back again and again, but in time the antibiotics stop working and the tests come back clear. For some women this is the bridge to a different understanding: that it is about a sensitive bladder and a long-term condition rather than one new infection after another.
The shift from «cystitis without bacteria» to interstitial cystitis or bladder pain syndrome is often gradual, and for many it is a great relief to finally have a name for it. International professional bodies such as the ICS and the IPBF describe exactly this pattern.

The GAG layer: the bladder's protective lining
The inside of the bladder is covered by a thin, mucous-like layer known as the GAG layer (the glycosaminoglycan layer). It acts as a protective coating between the urine and the sensitive bladder wall. A widely held explanatory model for interstitial cystitis is that this layer is weakened or leaky, so that substances in the urine irritate the wall beneath.
It is this mechanism that much of the research and patient experience revolves around: a GAG layer that does not hold tight can help explain why a bladder may ache and feel tender without any bacteria to treat. You can read more about aloe vera and the bladder.

Aloe vera for the bladder — not cranberry, not D-mannose
Most people looking into bladder troubles in Norway first come across cranberry and D-mannose. Both are aimed mainly at bacterial cystitis — they are meant to make it harder for bacteria to take hold. But with cystitis without bacteria there are, by definition, no bacteria to counter.
Here aloe vera for the bladder sits in a different space. Aloe vera capsules aimed at the bladder are not about bacteria, but about acemannan and possible support for the bladder's own GAG layer. Studies suggest a connection, and many people with IC say they use it daily — but aloe vera is not a medicine and not a cure.

The difference between bladder aloe and ordinary aloe vera
Aloe vera is sold everywhere — in skin creams, digestive products and juice. But aloe vera for the bladder calls for something quite different. What matters is that the aloe is aloin-free: aloin is a natural substance in the aloe plant that has a bowel-stimulating effect and has no place in a product you take daily for the bladder.
Desert Harvest's aloe vera is purified, decolourised and freeze-dried into a 200:1 concentrate, and it is anthraquinone-free. It is this quality — not a generic skin or digestive aloe — that sets a bladder aloe apart from the rest.

What do experience and the studies say?
Desert Harvest has around 30 years of experience with aloe vera and the bladder. A placebo-controlled study from 1995 reported that 87.5% experienced some relief and 50% considerable relief, and a 2016 survey from the ICA in the USA among 660 customers found that 92% reported relief. These are reported experiences, not proof of a cure.
Ongoing and completed research includes the DH-002 study under Professor Cervigni and AICI in Italy, as well as an independent study at Wake Forest (NCT04734106). We do not state any percentage outcome from Wake Forest. You will find a combined overview on the page about the research on aloe vera.

The menopause and a sensitive bladder
For many women, bladder troubles coincide with the menopause. Lower oestrogen can make the mucous membranes thinner and more vulnerable, and a sensitive bladder can feel worse during this time. This is why some are told that «it is just the menopause» — but a tender, aching bladder deserves to be taken seriously in its own right.
These troubles are often connected, and some people choose to support the bladder and the rest of the body at the same time. There is no shame in talking about this, and it is not something that «simply goes away on its own».

Aloin-free
Purified and decolourised aloe vera without aloin or anthraquinones — made to be taken daily for the bladder, not a generic skin or digestive aloe.

Common questions
What is interstitial cystitis?
Interstitial cystitis, also known as bladder pain syndrome, is a long-term condition with pain, urgency and discomfort in the bladder without bacteria being found. International professional bodies such as the IPBF and the ICS describe it as a condition in the bladder wall itself, often linked to a weakened GAG layer.
Why is my urine culture sterile when I am in so much pain?
A sterile urine culture means there are no bacteria in the sample. With cystitis without bacteria, the pain comes from the bladder wall itself, not from an infection. It is precisely this pattern — distressing symptoms with clear samples — that characterises interstitial cystitis.
What is the difference between aloe vera for the bladder and ordinary aloe vera?
Aloe vera for the bladder should be aloin-free, purified, decolourised and freeze-dried, ideally at a 200:1 concentrate. Ordinary skin or digestive aloe may contain aloin and is not made for daily use aimed at the bladder. Acemannan and the GAG layer are the qualitative mechanism.
Can I use aloe vera capsules together with D-mannose?
Many people combine different supplements. D-mannose is aimed at bacterial cystitis, while aloe vera for the bladder is about support for the bladder's own GAG layer. It is a good idea to talk to your doctor or pharmacist about your situation. Aloe vera is a food supplement, not a medicine.
Does Desert Harvest ship to Norway?
Yes. Bivio Medical distributes Desert Harvest in Europe and ships to Norway. Prices are in Norwegian kroner. Because Norway sits outside the EU, customs duties and import VAT may apply; the final amount is shown at checkout.
Is it common to be told that it is your age or the menopause?
Sadly, it is common. Many women with interstitial cystitis are first told that it is their age, their nerves or the menopause, and it can take years before the condition is given a name. A sensitive, aching bladder deserves to be taken seriously at any age.
