Soothing Dry, Cracked Hands: A Gentle Routine for Over-Washed Skin

16 June 2026 · 3 min read

Why hands get so dry and sore

Hands take more punishment than almost any other part of the body. Frequent washing, hand gel, cold air, hot water and cleaning products all strip away the natural oils that keep skin soft. Over time the skin can feel tight, look papery, and crack across the knuckles or fingertips. If yours sting after every wash, you are far from alone.

The fix is not complicated, but it does need to be regular. Dry hands are a moisture problem with a protection problem on top, so a good routine does two things: it puts water and comfort back in, and it helps hold them there.

A simple routine for dry, cracked hands

  • Wash kinder. Use lukewarm rather than hot water and a gentle, fragrance-free cleanser. Pat dry instead of rubbing.
  • Soothe first. On warm, tight or itchy skin, a thin layer of cool aloe vera gel takes the edge off and absorbs quickly.
  • Seal second. While hands are still slightly damp, follow with a richer hand cream or balm to lock the moisture in. Aloe alone is too light for very dry hands.
  • Top up often. Reapply after every wash — keep cream by the sink and in your bag.
  • Protect. Wear gloves for washing-up and cold weather to keep the worst of it off your skin.

Where aloe fits in

People sometimes expect aloe to fix dry hands by itself. It is wonderful as the cooling, calming first step, but because it is mostly water it works best teamed with something richer on top. That layering idea — light hydration sealed by a moisturiser — runs through all of our advice on caring for sensitive skin, and it is the same principle behind our fragrance-free calm-skin routine.

If your hands are reacting to a particular product, check what is in it. Our guide to reading an aloe label helps you avoid the alcohol and fragrance that dry skin dislikes, and you can find gentle creams and gels across our skin and body care range.

Common questions

Why are my hands so dry even though I moisturise?

Usually it is frequency. Washing strips moisture faster than one or two applications can replace it, so the trick is reapplying after every wash rather than using more at once.

Is aloe vera enough for cracked hands on its own?

It soothes beautifully but is too light to seal very dry skin. Use it first for comfort, then follow with a richer cream while hands are still damp.

Should I see someone about cracked hands?

If cracks are deep, painful, bleeding or not healing, or if you suspect hand eczema, a pharmacist or GP can suggest something stronger than everyday care.
